What safety considerations should be taken into account when making candles?

Making a candle yourself carries risks like any other hobby that requires a heat source. You must therefore be careful when making your scented candles. We are going to present our tips for a safe candle making session.

Basic rules

  • You should never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • The candle must be burned out of reach of children and pets.
  • You should not burn candles on or near anything that could catch fire.
  • Cut the wick to a maximum length of 1cm from the wax before lighting.
  • Do not place the candle near a heat source.
  • Do not move a lit candle.
  • Wear personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and gloves, to protect your eyes and skin from hot wax splashes.
  • Do not place the candle near a draft.
  • Be sure to work in a well-ventilated area. Some waxes, perfumes and dyes may emit fumes when heated.
  • Test your candles to ensure they burn safely and predictably before selling or giving them away.

Arrange your workspace

First of all, during your creative sessions, it is essential to immerse yourself in a calm and relaxing space, without any disturbance. Arrange your workspace by following our specific tips for each step. Keep children and pets away. You can spread newspaper on your work surface in the almost certain event that drops of wax fall. If the wax ever falls on your unprotected work surface, don't panic! Just wait for the wax to harden, then scrape it off.

Protect your body

Wear clothes you no longer like when you work. Wax splatters are difficult to remove. Avoid loose clothing that could get caught on pots or fall into the bain-marie. If you spill paraffin on your clothes, let it harden, then remove the excess by hand.

Don't walk away

As soon as the wax begins to melt in the water bath, stay nearby, regardless of the circumstances. Even if the phone rings, the children play, or the dog barks, don't walk away. Or turn off the heat source before leaving.

By following these safety rules, you limit the risk of injury or causing a fire, and increase the chances of success of your candle.
